Bird Battle

The Orioles first trip to St. Louis in 19 years & first time ever at the new Busch Stadium is memorable one as they take 2 out of 3 from a good Cardinals team & win another Series, they haven’t lost one in almost 2 weeks.

Game 1 : Orioles 5, Cardinals 3 – Cedric Mullins & Tyler Nevin go deep but Kyle Bradish steals the show as he strikes out 11 in 7 innings , his longest outing this season & the O’s take Game 1 in St. Louis. Bradish allows 2 runs on 4 hits & walks none to earn his first major-league win & the bats back him up as Mullins has 3 hits, steals a base, scores twice & drives in 2, in a 4-5 night & Anthony Santander goes 3-5 w/ an RBI double. Mullins hits a 2-run blast in the 3rd to break a scoreless tie & Nevin adds a another in the 4th to add to the lead against Cardinals starter, Packy Naughton. Making his first start for the Cards, the lefty allows 3 runs – all earned, on 5 hits, he strikes out 2 & walks none in 3 1/3 innings of work before departing in the 4th. Trey Mancini singles home a run in the 6th against Cards reliever, Kodi Whitley to add some much needed insurance because Harrison Bader’s 2-run, inside the park homerun (the first ever by a Cardinal in the current Busch Stadium) in the bottom of the 6th cuts the lead to 3 but Bradish rebounds to strike out the side. Dillon Tate gives up a lead off solo homer to Brendan Donovan (the first of his career) in the 9th & after a single, a wild pitch & a hit batter, Felix Bautista comes on to record the final out for his first career save. St. Louis has now dropped 3 in a row. Baltimore has now won 3 in a row for the first time all season, while also winning 7 of their last 10.

Yepez hits a solo shot in the 2nd, he has hit safely in all 7 games he has played since being called up on May 3rd. He is 12-27 so far this season. Donovan reaches base in all 4 of his trips to the plate, he adds a 2-run double in the 3-run 2nd against O’s starter, Spenser Watkins – his line, 3 2/3 innings pitched, 7 runs on 8 hits, 3 strikeouts & 2 walks. Goldschmidt doubles home 2 & scores on a double by Nolan Arenado in a 5-run 4th against Watkins, who fails to make it out of the inning. Goldschmidt singles home a run in the 6th & the Cardinals score 2 more in the 8th, both on ground ball outs, 1 by Tommy Edman who drives in a pair of runs on the night. Robinson Chirinos doubles in the only O’s run in the 5th as they muster only 5 hits on the night. MIkolas allows just a run on 4 hits, strikes out 3 & walks 1 in his 7 innings of work for St. Louis – he has allowed 2 runs or less in all 7 of his starts this season. Making his major-league debut, Jake Walsh pitches 2 scoreless innings in relief after being called up from Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis snaps a 3 game losing streak. Baltimore has won 7 of their last 11 after a 6-14 start to the season.

Bannon goes 1-4 w/ a strikeout in his debut, Mateo goes deep in the 2nd, a solo shot against Cardinals starter, Steven Matz – Matz loses his 2nd straight start, he goes 6 2/3 innings, allows 3 runs on 7 hits, strikes out 7 & doesn’t walk a man. Bemboom launches his first homer since 2020, another solo shot in the 7th off of of Matz & Cedric Mullins singles home a run against reliever, Genesis Cabrera. Dylan Carlson hits a solo shot in the 7th, the 8th game in a row that St. Louis has gone deep (the longest active streak in the majors) & Nolan Arenado adds a sac fly in the 8th but the Cardinals can get no closer despite threatening late. In his first big league start, Bryan Baker goes 2 1/3 innings, allows just 1 hit, strikes out 3 & walks none, he gives way to Keegan Akin in the 3rd & 4 other relievers take care of the rest, including a 4 out save from Felix Bautista, who gets 4 outs in a row, including the 3rd Orioles double play ball of the game, when Tyler O’Neill is doubled up from 1st on a pop fly. Baltimore takes 2 out of 3 & improves to 4-1 in rubber games, they have won 8 of their last 12 & moved to 4th place in the AL East.
